Welcome – update

July 9th 2009 in News

It’s been a veeery long time since my first post… 3 years ago. Seems I didn’t get my win… Well, in fact I did, but that’s what this post is all about.

Studies
Last time I wrote, I was a computer science and economics student at the University of Trier. Let’s just says… it didn’t work out. There were a few mediating factors, or complications so to say, but one of the reasons was: I HATE economics! It all seems like overcompensating middle-aged men had nothing else to do, but write a shitload of crap to bore students with. And there really were intelligent professors that actually believed in it… Well, to each his own, I guess. Sadly, because of the “other complications”, it took me over 4 years to realise how much I dislike economics. So I decided to break of my studies, return home and apply for a job.

Have you ever tried finding a computer science job with just a high-school diploma? I know, it’s not impossible, but I wanted a job related to programming, development or something in that area. And not end up as a helpdesk monkey… I did have a few interviews and each time I was told that I’m a very nice and competent guy, but in the end I always ended up second place. You have to know, that the French language is wildly used in this country. And after having dropped it in the last year of high-school and all those years of studies in Germany, my skills in the French language were a little rusty, to say the least. That was always the reason why I didn’t get the job…

So I decided to start another round of university studies here in Luxembourg. Now that we have a university ;)   Now I’m studying software engineering (bachelor in engineering in computer science), and so far, I couldn’t be happier! I found some new very good friends, I’m top of the class with excellent marks and the studies are a lot of fun. I’m actually considering becoming a life-long student, as a teacher and researcher at the university. I love learning new things and often drop them as soon as I “master” them. Therefore research seems to be the perfect field for me. And then having teachers telling me that I would be perfect candidate for a master/PHD and them proposing me meetings to show me what they can offer me is a wonderful and gratifying feeling! We’ll have to see, what I can and want to do. For now, I still have a year to of bachelor studies to do. And I also have to consider the following:

Apartment
My girlfriend, still Sandy by the way – it’s been over 7 years now -, bought an apartment a while ago and we’re moving in together when it’s finished in a few weeks (hopefully weeks, not months!). My parents will be able to finance my studies for a while still, but I have to check for how long. And I want to do my part in the apartment and I don’t want to live of Sandy’s pocket. Maybe I’ll have to get a job to do the masters degree. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, but I have to find the right one.

Oh but the apartment… It’s gorgeous! 110 m² duplex, 3 bedrooms, 1 big and 1 small bathroom, 30 m² patio, 60 m² garden, 2 underground parking lots and a big storage space in the basement! It’s going to be a lot of work, all of which I’m very looking forward too! :)

Updates
Here are few more updates:

  • My father had one thing to say about my page: that’s not why I named you Sam David Christophe! As it turns out, I really did get the story wrong, as my mom explained. When I was born, all three names were on the table and although my parents agreed on Sam, my father wasn’t prepared to let the other two go, or something like that.
  • Maybe you’ve heard or even have been one of the victims like me, but RegisterFly lost their ICANN registration a while back. All their niceness and helpfulness was blown out the window. I didn’t get my domain transferral as requested and had to wait for the registration to run out. All well and good, if afterwards I didn’t have to wait for a month before re-registering it with a different registrar… It seems as RegisterFly is back, but they lost me as a customer for sure. Now I’m with eurodns.com. They aren’t as cheap, but the registration was completely automated. Even the letter you have to send in to the .it TLD NIC is auto generated/filled. And last but not least: their headquarters is located in Luxembourg! You have to support the local business and all that ;)

That’s it for now and I’m hoping to be back sooner for my next post!

Have fun,
Sam
